Abstract

Comparison of Resting and Dynamic Endoscopic Examination of the Upper Portion of the Respiratory Tract in 40 Thoroughbred Yearlings. P. G. Kelly, R. J. M. Reardon, P. J. Pollock. Reasons for Performing the Study: Endoscopic examination of Thoroughbred (TB) yearlings is routinely performed to determine the suitability of horses for racing and to ensure the conditions of sale are satisfied. However, previous research has demonstrated that resting endoscopic examination can be inaccurate in the diagnosis of functional pathology of the URT. Hypothesis: Significant variation exists between the pathology of the URT identified during resting endoscopy and that identified during dynamic endoscopic examination in a group of TB yearlings intended for racing. Materials and Methods: Resting (pre- and postexercise) and dynamic over ground exercising endoscopy of 40 TB yearlings was performed. Preexercise, exercise, and postexercise endoscopy videos were blindly reviewed. All abnormalities were recorded and where appropriate graded using reported scales. Variation in the frequency of occurrence of the most commonly identified abnormalities at rest and exercise was statistically analyzed. Results: Endoscopic examination was successfully performed in all horses presented. Laryngeal asymmetry was identified in 45% of horses at rest preexercise, in 10% of horses during exercise, and in 33% of horses at rest postexercise. There were significantly more cases of laryngeal asymmetry (≥ grade II.1) at rest both pre- and postexercise than at exercise. IDDSP was identified in 23% of horses at rest pre exercise, 55% of horses during exercise, and 18% of horses at rest postexercise. There were significantly more cases of IDDSP at exercise than at rest both pre- and postexercise. Conclusions: Dynamic endoscopic examination of TB yearlings during lunging exercise conditions is a useful diagnostic technique when assessing URT function and could be used to assess suitability for sale and/or future racing performance. This has potential significant welfare implications for the Thoroughbred industry.
