Abstract

The most relevant and meaningful nursing research is normally that which is grounded in everyday practice, experience and observations. However, turning an idea into a research proposal can be a complex and protracted process. Cardiac nurses need to consider theoretical, contextual and practical issues if they are to develop a clinical observation or idea so that it can be researched. This process is not a series of ‘steps’ which can be taken, but rather one that requires clinical nurses to simultaneously integrate their professional knowledge, skills and experience with methodological understanding, and an ability to express their ideas in writing. This article in the series discusses the range of interrelated issues which cardiac nurses will need to consider in developing their ideas, and turning them into feasible and ethical research proposals.
