Abstract

The objective of this PhD thesis was to produce a complete research study in the field of polyesters derived from biomass feedstocks, by integrating knowledge from polymer chemistry, polymer reaction engineering and process engineering. Previous research in the area of biopolymers has been mainly focused in their synthesis and characterisation whereas the process and reaction engineering work remains scarce. A thorough systematic framework was therefore developed, which was comprised not only by the renewable polymer synthesis and characterisation, but also by kinetic modelling, simulation and optimisation tools, prompting the scale up and real application of these polymers and providing tangible and useful information to academia, polymer industry and policy makers.
