Abstract

This thesis investigates the impact of the river Ganges on Calcutta during the period of British occupation following the Battle of Plassey. This thesis asks a series of interlinked questions; How did the river Ganges contribute to and inform our understanding of Calcutta during the colonial period?’ How can we think about the city of Calcutta from the vantage point of the River? How did the fluidity and uncertainty of the River challenge the somewhat fixed and known aspects of colonial life ashore?
