Abstract

While mindfulness has beneficial effects in many domains, several authors have questioned whether this is unequivocally the case in the context of work-related performance. This longitudinal study analyzes how dispositional mindfulness relates to taking entrepreneurial action: engaging in concrete activities aimed at starting a business. Based on two waves of survey data, we find that mindfulness has a negative linear effect on the likelihood of taking some action versus not taking any action. However, we also find that, for individuals who took at least some action, the effect of mindfulness on the extent of action undertaken is U-shaped. Individuals scoring either low or high on mindfulness take more action than individuals with moderate levels of mindfulness. Thus, our results imply that individuals with higher mindfulness have a higher threshold to take action and that they may start qualitatively different businesses than those with low mindfulness.
