Abstract

Abstract
Does the investment treaty regime and its investor-State dispute settlement mechanism strengthen or weaken the rule of law in host States? Does the regime assist developing countries in promoting greater effectiveness of the rule of law at the domestic level? This chapter seeks to explore these questions by drawing on a growing body of empirical insights into the rule-of-law impacts of investment treaties on domestic constituencies, with particular focus on developing countries. The overarching objective of the chapter is to reveal some of the on-the-ground perceptions and experiences that often remain unseen behind conceptual framings of international investment law.
