Abstract

This thesis examines contemporary British and American narratives to understand how they represent assisted dying and the significance of certain formal, thematic, stylistic, and structural features. Formed around the idea of ‘talking’, this thesis highlights how discourses and narratives shape, and are shaped by, attitudes, behaviours, and practices in the ‘real world.’ The idea of ‘talking’ also works as an organisational concept, with each chapter focused on voice and authorship; reflecting on who is telling the story, whose voices are heard, whose perspectives are privileged, and whose are absent, ignored, and side-lined.
