Abstract

In this work we have prepared composites between TiNT and BN by a novel mixed hydrothermal/solvothermal method at different temperatures and compared this to physical mixing. TiNT have a high surface area which can act as a support, or scaffold, for more active species however they have limited photcatalytic activity themselves. Based on these concerns, and in an attempt to improve the photocatalytic activity of TiNT by composite doping, we prepared several composites at different temperatures. The structure and optical properties of the composites were examined by TEM, XPS and UV–vis, while the charge carrier lifetime was investigated by PL spectroscopy. Finally, the photocatalytic hydrogen production was measured. The composite prepared at 140 °C showed evidence of Ti-O-B bond formation and enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production with an efficiency of 1600 µmolg-1hr-1. Based on these results we have proposed a band diagram to explain the enhanced activity and believe this method offers an approach for further photocatalyst modification.
