Abstract

Mond is a composition that explores novel approaches to the representation of musical material via screen-based scores. Drawing on research from prominent researchers in this area (e.g., Hope and Vickery), it was developed iteratively to demonstrate a wide range of representational possibilities. Version 1 was designed for the Decibel ScorePlayer (https://decibelnewmusic.com/decibel-scoreplayer/)—software that facilitates the creation of animated scores that can be easily synchronised across multiple iPads. Because this version of the score is a fixed image (that scrolls from right to left), it may also be distributed as a multi-page PDF file. Version 2 was created in Unity (game engine). Notational objects are animated in real-time and randomised with each playthrough. It may be played by any ensemble that consists of two winds, two strings, and percussion. (Instrument/performer names can be dynamically set in the main menu.) Text-based instructions guide the performers through each section, and these instructions can be disabled for a more abstract display during performance. In addition to existing as standalone software, the score runs in a web browser and is freely accessible at: https://paulturowski.itch.io/mond Accessibility was a primary consideration in the decisions to 1) use an open instrumentation and pitch classes (instead of specific pitches in fixed registers), 2) use simple shapes and patterns for readability on different devices and at various distances from the score, 3) use indeterminate notation that can be sufficiently realised by performers with various levels of technical skill, and 4) present the score to audiences to facilitate an understanding of the performers’ experience without requiring musical literacy. The work provides a model for future work that strives to efficiently communicate musical ideas in an accessible manner using widely available digital devices.
