Abstract

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>The first measurement of <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$${{J}/\psi }$$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>J</mml:mi> <mml:mo>/</mml:mo> <mml:mi>ψ</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> </mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula> and <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$${{D}} ^0$$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msup> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>D</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mn>0</mml:mn> </mml:msup> </mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula> production in PbNe collisions by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is reported. The production of <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$${{J}/\psi }$$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>J</mml:mi> <mml:mo>/</mml:mo> <mml:mi>ψ</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> </mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula> and <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$${{D}} ^0$$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msup> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>D</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mn>0</mml:mn> </mml:msup> </mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula> mesons is studied with a beam of lead ions with an energy of 2.5<jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$\,\text {TeV}$$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mspace /> <mml:mtext>TeV</mml:mtext> </mml:mrow> </mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula> per nucleon colliding on gaseous neon targets at rest, corresponding to a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle \text {NN}}} =68.5\,\text {GeV} $$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msqrt> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>s</mml:mi> <mml:mstyle> <mml:mtext>NN</mml:mtext> </mml:mstyle> </mml:msub> </mml:msqrt> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mn>68.5</mml:mn> <mml:mspace /> <mml:mtext>GeV</mml:mtext> </mml:mrow> </mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula>. These data are compared with measurements from <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$p\text {Ne}$$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>p</mml:mi> <mml:mtext>Ne</mml:mtext> </mml:mrow> </mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula> collisions at the same energy and show no difference in the observed <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$${{J}/\psi }$$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>J</mml:mi> <mml:mo>/</mml:mo> <mml:mi>ψ</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> </mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula> suppression trend when comparing <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$p\text {Ne}$$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>p</mml:mi> <mml:mtext>Ne</mml:mtext> </mml:mrow> </mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula> and PbNe peripheral collisions with PbNe central collisions.</jats:p>
