Abstract

Poets in Vogue is the first exhibition to approach poetry and poets through dress. Through imaginative recreations of seven 20th-century women poets’ signature ‘looks’, along with archival and reconstructed garments, the exhibition challenges assumptions about the superficiality of fashion, unveiling the importance of clothes to these poets’ art, in turn stressing poetry as an embodied practice. It proposes, for the first time and using the sartorial and poetic style of its subjects, that there are significant relationships between language and dress. The exhibition is also notable for its innovative, interdisciplinary methodology. The curators worked with an expert costume-maker, using archival and other research to reconstruct or interpret poets' clothes (for example Anne Sexton's red reading dress, which no longer exists), but also using the knowledge gained from dress-making to direct the exhibition's insights about poetry and its relationship to clothes. In an accompanying article in Modernism/modernity, this approach is framed as a new development in feminist materialist methodology.
