Abstract

Transient and time-harmonic waves are analysed for a new class of elongated chiral multi-structures subjected to gravity. The governing equations of motion incorporate a gyroscopic coupling between different displacement components, as well as the first-order derivative terms due to gravity. Examples include the study of waves in a waveguide, referred to as the “chiral rope”. Boundary conditions are presented for the boundary layers, which occur near the end regions of the waveguide. We provide the physical interpretations on the interaction between the chirality and gravity of the multi-scale system. The theoretical findings are accompanied by illustrative computations.
