Abstract

<jats:title>A<jats:sc>bstract</jats:sc> </jats:title><jats:p>The production of prompt <jats:italic>D</jats:italic><jats:sup>+</jats:sup> and <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$ {D}_s^{+} $$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msubsup> <mml:mi>D</mml:mi> <mml:mi>s</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> </mml:msubsup> </mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula> mesons is studied in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$ \sqrt{s_{NN}} $$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msqrt> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>s</mml:mi> <mml:mi>NN</mml:mi> </mml:msub> </mml:msqrt> </mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula> = 5<jats:italic>.</jats:italic>02 TeV. The data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of (1<jats:italic>.</jats:italic>58 ± 0<jats:italic>.</jats:italic>02)nb<jats:sup><jats:italic>−</jats:italic>1</jats:sup> is collected by the LHCb experiment at the LHC. The differential production cross-sections are measured using <jats:italic>D</jats:italic><jats:sup>+</jats:sup> and <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$ {D}_s^{+} $$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msubsup> <mml:mi>D</mml:mi> <mml:mi>s</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> </mml:msubsup> </mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula> candidates with transverse momentum in the range of 0 <jats:italic>&lt; p</jats:italic><jats:sub>T</jats:sub><jats:italic>&lt;</jats:italic> 14 GeV<jats:italic>/c</jats:italic> and rapidities in the ranges of 1<jats:italic>.</jats:italic>5 <jats:italic>&lt; y</jats:italic><jats:sup>∗</jats:sup><jats:italic>&lt;</jats:italic> 4<jats:italic>.</jats:italic>0 and –5<jats:italic>.</jats:italic>0 <jats:italic>&lt; y</jats:italic><jats:sup><jats:italic>∗</jats:italic></jats:sup><jats:italic>&lt;</jats:italic> –2<jats:italic>.</jats:italic>5 in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass system. For both particles, the nuclear modification factor and the forward-backward production ratio are determined. These results are compared with theoretical models that include initial-state nuclear effects. In addition, measurements of the cross-section ratios between <jats:italic>D</jats:italic><jats:sup>+</jats:sup>, <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$ {D}_s^{+} $$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msubsup> <mml:mi>D</mml:mi> <mml:mi>s</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> </mml:msubsup> </mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula> and <jats:italic>D</jats:italic><jats:sup>0</jats:sup> mesons are presented, providing a baseline for studying the charm hadronization in lead-lead collisions at LHC energies.</jats:p>
