Abstract
Instructional notes based on a series of lectures in Trieste in 2009. They are primarily an account of knot and link invariants derived from the Homfly polynomial by the use of satellites, giving also their relation with quantum group knot invariants, leading to methods for deriving 3-manifold invariants.
