Abstract

Dominated by the Rhine-Maas-Schelde delta since the early days of settlement, the Netherlands is one of the smaller European countries. Due to its exceptionally high population density, the country has developed remarkably innovative skills in dealing with the scarcity of available land. This article draws on past and present examples to show that new paradigms and creative solutions are visible not only in more traditional sectors like coastal protection technology, land reclamation or urban planning. Rather, the Netherlands have also had to adapt to more recent challenges such as the integration of refugees, growing awareness of climate change, and conflicting interests between economy and ecology.
