Abstract
The properties of nanoparticles have attracted a continuous fascination for a long time, since the original work of Faraday to current interest in their possible applications in cancer therapy, novel electrosyntheses and their possible use as building blocks in complex nanostructures. This review concentrates mainly in their unusual properties of aiding electron transfer by tunnelling, in some cases leading to the counterintuitive observation of acting as a “short circuit” within otherwise insulating films.
