Abstract

<jats:title>A<jats:sc>bstract</jats:sc></jats:title><jats:p>A search for the decay<jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$ {B}_S^0\to {\overline{K}}^{\ast 0}{\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-} $$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:msubsup><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mi>S</mml:mi><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:msubsup><mml:mo>→</mml:mo><mml:msup><mml:mover><mml:mi>K</mml:mi><mml:mo>¯</mml:mo></mml:mover><mml:mrow><mml:mo>∗</mml:mo><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup><mml:msup><mml:mi>μ</mml:mi><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:msup><mml:mi>μ</mml:mi><mml:mo>−</mml:mo></mml:msup></mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula>is presented using data sets corresponding to 1.0, 2.0 and 1.6 fb<jats:sup>−1</jats:sup>of integrated luminosity collected during<jats:italic>pp</jats:italic>collisions with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, respectively. An excess is found over the background-only hypothesis with a significance of 3.4 standard deviations. The branching fraction of the<jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$ {B}_S^0\to {\overline{K}}^{\ast 0}{\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-} $$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:msubsup><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mi>S</mml:mi><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:msubsup><mml:mo>→</mml:mo><mml:msup><mml:mover><mml:mi>K</mml:mi><mml:mo>¯</mml:mo></mml:mover><mml:mrow><mml:mo>∗</mml:mo><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup><mml:msup><mml:mi>μ</mml:mi><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:msup><mml:mi>μ</mml:mi><mml:mo>−</mml:mo></mml:msup></mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula>decay is determined to be<jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$ \mathrm{\mathcal{B}}\left({B}_s^0\to {\overline{K}}^{\ast 0}{\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)=\left[2.9\pm 1.0\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.2\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.3\left(\mathrm{norm}\right)\right]\times {10}^{-8} $$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mi>ℬ</mml:mi><mml:mfenced><mml:mrow><mml:msubsup><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mi>s</mml:mi><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:msubsup><mml:mo>→</mml:mo><mml:msup><mml:mover><mml:mi>K</mml:mi><mml:mo>¯</mml:mo></mml:mover><mml:mrow><mml:mo>∗</mml:mo><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup><mml:msup><mml:mi>μ</mml:mi><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:msup><mml:mi>μ</mml:mi><mml:mo>−</mml:mo></mml:msup></mml:mrow></mml:mfenced><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mfenced><mml:mrow><mml:mn>2.9</mml:mn><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>1.0</mml:mn><mml:mfenced><mml:mi>stat</mml:mi></mml:mfenced><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>0.2</mml:mn><mml:mfenced><mml:mi>syst</mml:mi></mml:mfenced><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>0.3</mml:mn><mml:mfenced><mml:mi>norm</mml:mi></mml:mfenced></mml:mrow></mml:mfenced><mml:mo>×</mml:mo><mml:msup><mml:mn>10</mml:mn><mml:mrow><mml:mo>−</mml:mo><mml:mn>8</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:math></jats:alternatives></jats:inline-formula>, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The third uncertainty is due to limited knowledge of external parameters used to normalise the branching fraction measurement.</jats:p>
