Abstract

A complex network of host and virological factors will contnbute to the success or failure of antiTetrovlral therapy. Cellular and viral mechanisms contribute to variability in suppression of the virus. Tlie immune response to HIV is insufficient to resolve infection and there is increasing evidence that exhaustion of immune cells in chrome infection is a major cause of this mability to clear infection. ~Negative costimulatory proteins may contribute to this phenomenon. In addition, there are a considerable number of variables that affect the expression of proteins involved in these costimulatory processes.
