Abstract
Immune cells play a critical role in the development of Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative condition whose aetiology and disease progression are characterized by both neuroinflammation and peripheral inflammation. Although neurodegenerative diseases have been studied extensively, little is known about the molecular and genetic mechanisms that regulate the function of the specialized immune cells of the central nervous system and/or in the peripheral tissues, contributing to Parkinson’s disease. In part, this may be due to a lack of suitable experimental models for Parkinson’s disease and limitations in isolating immune cell populations from human central nervous system. This review focuses on the approaches that are utilized by researchers to investigate epigenetic modifications, our current understanding on those epigenetic changes that underlie the function of the immune cells and immune response seen in Parkinson’s disease, as well as highlighting the future development of pharmaceutical treatments of this multifaceted disease through modulating these epigenetic changes.
