Abstract

The increased availability of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in higher education has prompted many to revisit their policies and practices. Over the 2023–2024 academic year, the Centre for Innovation in Education (CIE) updated the University of Liverpool’s academic integrity policy, provided guidance, and facilitated staff training on the integration of GenAI into practice. In this study we evaluated the experiences of academic staff and students regarding the use of GenAI, following the implementation of updated policies. We collected data through questionnaires focussing on staff and student use of GenAI. The results reveal differences between staff apprehensions and student engagement. While staff reported observing multiple unacceptable uses of GenAI, students expressed willingness to incorporate these tools into both academic and non-academic tasks. Our recommendations include developing flexible and responsive guidelines aim to support dialogue between students and staff to mitigate fears and ensure the responsible and productive use of GenAI.
