Summary

This chapter addresses the role historic human remains have played in British churches since the nineteenth century as heritage assets, through two genres of human remains that have been deliberately presented for encountering inside post-Reformation British churches: charnel and medieval saints. This chapter moves heritage scholarship beyond the current emphasis on human remains in archaeological and museum studies and recentres focus on them within church buildings. It addresses two crucial questions for the first time: How has the confessional divide been navigated when publicly displaying charnel or promoting medieval saints’ remains in Protestant churches? And how have tangible (architectural) and intangible (digital) spaces of the church facilitated encounters with charnel and saints?
