Abstract

Circular supply networks (CSNs) are essential organizational forms for advancing the transition to a circular economy and can be supported by digital technologies. However, limited understanding exists of how digital technologies become embedded in CSN configurations. This study addresses this gap by examining the structuring logics and governance dynamics of digital technology-enabled CSNs. The study employs a rigorous multiple-case study design, drawing on 30 interviews and extensive archival data analyzed through a systematic coding approach. Applying actor–network theory (ANT), this research analyzes five blockchain applications across different industries to investigate how digital technologies become embedded in CSN configurations. The findings reveal four translation processes underlying CSN configuration: anchoring actor tensions, actor-centric alignment, technology-embedded governance, and the emergence of reconfigured CSNs. These processes give rise to two distinct configuration pathways, enhancement and structuration. By integrating ANT, the study advances understanding of how digital technologies configure CSNs by unpacking the sociotechnical dynamics through which human and nonhuman actors co-shape CSNs. The insights highlight the importance of adopting a network-oriented perspective when implementing circular initiatives and designing governance mechanisms that align with underlying value creation.
