Reconfiguring supply chains amid geopolitical risks: a systematic review of emerging topics

Abstract
In recent years, geopolitical events such as Brexit and the U.S.–China trade war have become increasingly frequent and have had significant impacts on supply chains. Supply chain reconfiguration has been recognised as an effective approach to addressing geopolitical risks (GPRs). However, existing literature reviews in this field exhibit several limitations that motivate us to advance the understanding of supply chain reconfiguration amid GPRs. Accordingly, we conduct a systematic literature review of 92 high-quality journal articles published between 2015 and May 2026 to identify key emerging topics, their antecedents–decisions–outcomes (ADO) frameworks, and the associated research gaps and future research directions. Specifically, we apply a topic modelling technique combined with a semantic validation approach to classify the articles into five topics and rank their scores of emergence. This process identifies three emerging topics: supply chain reconfigurations in advanced technology sectors, adaptive risk management approaches, and diversification strategies. For each emerging topic, we develop topic-specific research frameworks using an ADO framework incorporating moderators. Based on identified gaps, we propose tailored future research directions for each emerging topic. Overall, this study advances the understanding of supply chain reconfiguration amid GPRs and provides actionable insights for future researchers and practitioners.
