Abstract
Ed Miliband’s style of communication is prone to variable success. For example he was most effective in communicating a convincing narrative during his keynote speeches to the 2012 and 2013 Labour conferences, yet this success only occasionally translates to the media or the Commons. This is because his conference successes were heavily dependent upon his ethos and his political persona, which enlivened his sympathetic audience. Both speeches were also textured frequently by pathos which was designed to provoke specific reactions from his audience, such as applause or discontent with the Conservatives. However his use of logos was often limited. Indeed, he would eschew logos whilst embracing his ethos and pathos-driven arguments.
