Abstract

<jats:title>A<jats:sc>bstract</jats:sc> </jats:title> <jats:p>Inclusive J/<jats:italic>ψ</jats:italic> production is studied in p-Pb interactions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision <jats:inline-formula> <jats:alternatives> <jats:tex-math>$$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=8.16 $$</jats:tex-math> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msqrt> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>s</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>N</mml:mi> <mml:mi>N</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> </mml:msub> </mml:msqrt> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mn>8.16</mml:mn> </mml:math> </jats:alternatives> </jats:inline-formula> TeV, using the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The J/<jats:italic>ψ</jats:italic> meson is reconstructed, via its decay to a muon pair, in the centre-of-mass rapidity intervals 2.03 < <jats:italic>y</jats:italic> <jats:sub>cms</jats:sub> < 3.53 and −4.46 < <jats:italic>y</jats:italic> <jats:sub>cms</jats:sub> < −2.96, where positive and negative <jats:italic>y</jats:italic> <jats:sub>cms</jats:sub> refer to the p-going and Pb-going direction, respectively. The transverse momentum coverage is <jats:italic>p</jats:italic> <jats:sub>T</jats:sub> < 20 GeV/<jats:italic>c</jats:italic>. In this paper, <jats:italic>y</jats:italic> <jats:sub>cms</jats:sub>- and <jats:italic>p</jats:italic> <jats:sub>T</jats:sub>-differential cross sections for inclusive J/<jats:italic>ψ</jats:italic> production are presented, and the corresponding nuclear modification factors <jats:italic>R</jats:italic> <jats:sub>pPb</jats:sub> are shown. Forward results show a suppression of the J/<jats:italic>ψ</jats:italic> yield with respect to pp collisions, concentrated in the region <jats:italic>p</jats:italic> <jats:sub>T</jats:sub> ≲ 5 GeV/<jats:italic>c</jats:italic>. At backward rapidity no significant suppression is observed. The results are compared to previous measurements by ALICE in p-Pb collisions at <jats:inline-formula> <jats:alternatives> <jats:tex-math>$$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02 $$</jats:tex-math> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msqrt> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>s</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>N</mml:mi> <mml:mi>N</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> </mml:msub> </mml:msqrt> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mn>5.02</mml:mn> </mml:math> </jats:alternatives> </jats:inline-formula> TeV and to theoretical calculations. Finally, the ratios <jats:italic>R</jats:italic> <jats:sub>FB</jats:sub> between forward- and backward-<jats:italic>y</jats:italic> <jats:sub>cms</jats:sub> <jats:italic>R</jats:italic> <jats:sub>pPb</jats:sub> values are shown and discussed. </jats:p>
