Abstract

In this paper, a radio frequency (RF) energy harvester by using a rectenna array and rectifier-booster regulators (RBR) is presented. The design focuses on long distance RF energy harvesting. The proposed RBR, which evolves from a Greinacher rectifier and a Dickson charge pump, is implemented to improve the output voltage level of each rectenna. Eachrectenna element is cascaded to an RBR to rectify AC power into to DC and boost the output voltage. The array elements are connected in series to further improve the output voltage. Measurement results indicate that the proposed RF energy harvester can provide over1 V output voltage within a distance of 1 m from a transmit antenna with 20 dBm transmitting power. The harvested energy by the proposed harvester from a WiFi router can be utilized to power internet of thing (IoT) sensor nodes directly. The design has demonstrated the practicability of the proposed harvester in real applications.
