Abstract
This book examines the officialisation of Arabic as Algeria's national language, unpicking the mechanisms that support the widespread prevalence of French, the former colonial language. Sebaa discusses the relatively weak position of Arabic in opposition to French, providing an insight into the status of the languages from both historical and contemporary perspectives.
