Abstract

Malaria is a substantial febrile illness threat for children living in or travelling from endemic countries. It is a medical emergency but outcomes are better when there is prompt assessment, treatment and appropriate specialist input. It is one of the most common imported infections in the United Kingdom, and children are particularly vulnerable to deterioration if malaria is not suspected early and treated promptly. There were 1683 cases of imported malaria detected in the UK in 2018 and just over 1 in 10 cases were seen in children. In this short review we discuss the optimal assessment of the febrile child with suspected malaria and/or severe or complicated malaria and its treatment.
